Euronav Finalizes Sale and Leaseback Deal for Four VLCCs

Jan 06, 2017 00:34

Euronav, the leading Belgian tanker operator, has successfully executed a five-year sale and leaseback arrangement for four very large crude carriers (VLCCs) with investment entities managed by Wafra Capital Partners, a private equity firm backed by Kuwaiti funding. The vessels involved in the agreement are the Nautilus (built in 2006), Navarin (2007), Neptun (2007), and Nucleus (2007). This significant transaction implies a collective purchase price of $186 million, resulting in an impressive capital gain of approximately $37 million for Euronav. Following the settlement of existing debts, the deal has also yielded over $100 million in free cash. The transfer of ownership to Wafra Capital Partners' investment vehicles was finalized on December 22. As part of the agreement, Euronav has secured a bareboat lease for these vessels at an average daily rate of $22,000 each, ensuring their return to the new owners at the conclusion of the five-year lease period. The VLCCs were constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), highlighting the strong engineering behind these maritime giants.

Maersk Tankers Takes Two Supertankers Out of Service Amidst Low Crude Oil Prices

Nov 20, 2012 18:00

In response to the plummeting rates in the crude oil market, Maersk Tankers has decided to temporarily decommission two of its most prominent supertankers, the "Maersk Nautilus" and the "Maersk Nucleus." These vessels are scheduled to be laid up in the tranquil waters off the coast of Malaysia for a period of no less than one year. Specifically, they will find their resting place in Brunei Bay, renowned for being a strategic location for vessel lay-ups. Notably, another supertanker, the "Titan Tulshyan," is already anchored in this busy bay, further emphasizing its status as a preferred site for maritime downtime. As the industry grapples with current challenges, the decision underscores the ongoing impact of market conditions on shipping operations.
