On October 18, 2024, at around 4:10 p.m., the tugboat 'Luther,' carrying a crew of five, experienced a significant loss of steering approximately 10 miles off the coast of La Push while engaged in towing a barge. Faced with turbulent sea conditions that threatened both the vessel and its crew, the 'Luther' called for assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard. Responding swiftly, teams from Coast Guard Station Quillayute River, together with the emergency tug 'Lauren Foss', rushed to the scene. After a crew member was transferred to the 'Luther' to provide support, the 'Lauren Foss' commenced towing operations. However, the initial attempt was hindered when the tow line became tangled in one of the tug's propellers, compelling the 'Lauren Foss' to return to shore for necessary repairs. The situation escalated when the Canadian Coast Guard's tug 'Atlantic Raven' joined the mission, collaborating with U.S. Coast Guard Station Neah Bay. Together, they successfully secured a new tow line, ensuring the safe transit of the 'Luther' back to Port Angeles.
