Coast Guard Successfully Controls Diesel Spill Near Ambassador Bridge
On February 4, a diesel fuel discharge incident occurred while the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 'Mackinaw' was refueling in the Detroit River, close to the Ambassador Bridge. Fortunately, the Coast Guard swiftly deployed sorbent booms that captured nearly all of the spilled diesel, with only a small amount left behind due to the boom becoming frozen in the surrounding ice. Coast Guard Sector Detroit, in collaboration with Marine Pollution Control contracted teams, is actively monitoring the situation. Plans are underway to safely recover the boom along with any residual fuel trapped in the ice, as soon as weather conditions improve. The investigation into the cause of the discharge is still ongoing.
Coast Guard's Mackinaw Experiences Diesel Fuel Discharge in Detroit River
On February 4, 2014, a diesel fuel discharge incident involving the U.S. Coast Guard vessel, the "Mackinaw," occurred while the ship was refueling in the Detroit River near the Ambassador Bridge. Upon discovering the leak, the vessel's crew promptly secured the fuel source and initiated initial cleanup efforts onboard. To mitigate environmental impact, crew members deployed containment booms around the spillage area, limiting further spread of the fuel. Coast Guard Sector Detroit's pollution response team, already on site, estimated that between 200 to 300 gallons of diesel had entered the waterway. In response to the situation, the Coast Guard has engaged an oil spill removal organization to carry out comprehensive cleanup operations, including the use of a vacuum truck and additional boom barriers. The investigation into the cause of the discharge is ongoing. Following these actions, the "Mackinaw" was granted permission to leave the incident site to assist with an urgent ice-breaking operation.
Mackinaw's Dry-Dock Repairs Set to Commence
The icebreaking buoy tender 'Mackinaw' is set to embark on a much-anticipated journey for essential repairs, addressing issues with its leaking bow-thruster. Captain of the vessel confirmed that this significant repair mission will commence in approximately one week as of November 25, 2011. The ship is scheduled to enter dry-dock at Fraser Shipyards, located in Superior, Wisconsin. This visit marks the 'Mackinaw's' return to Fraser, following an earlier maintenance stop in June 2009, when repairs were made to a leaking shaft seal in the starboard engine pod.
