On November 1, 2017, in a significant drug operation, four individuals were apprehended in Tauranga after retrieving a massive cocaine shipment from a concealed compartment on the hull of the 'Maersk Antares.' The illicit cargo, approximately 46 kilograms of cocaine valued at around NZ$20 million (or $450 per gram), was discovered following a five-month investigation conducted by Customs and Police, who were anticipating this particular delivery. The 'Maersk Antares' had just arrived from Chile late on the night of October 31 when the criminal syndicate exploited the cover of darkness to access the ship and transport the drugs to their residence. It’s essential to note that the ship and its crew were not implicated in any drug trafficking activities. After the incident, the vessel departed Tauranga on November 1, continuing its journey to Hong Kong.
