Maersk-Bintan Ship Details and Seafarer Feedback

On June 23, 2012, a thrilling rescue operation unfolded after a crew member from the container ship 'Maersk Bintan' fell overboard. The Portsmouth-based Coast Guard 5th District command center sprang into action upon receiving a distress signal from another member of the crew, reporting a missing person presumed to be in the water. The Coast Guard watchstanders quickly gathered critical information, such as the last known sighting of the crew member, the ship's location at that moment, and the times of the incident. Utilizing the advanced Search And Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS), they formulated a strategic search plan to account for prevailing currents and environmental conditions. An urgent call for assistance was dispatched to several nearby maritime units. Remarkably, just before the additional search crews arrived onsite, the vigilant crew of the 'Maersk Bintan' made contact with the command center at around 3 p.m., reporting that they had spotted the missing crewman treading water in the designated search area. Astonishingly, the man had survived approximately 10 hours in the water before being rescued.
