On January 13, 2021, at approximately 7:50 p.m. UTC, the container ship 'Maersk Cardiff' was the target of piracy attempts 150 nautical miles southwest of Bonny, as reported from position 02° 23N 005° 39E. A small vessel, suspected to be manned by pirates, initially pursued the ship, prompting the crew to retreat to the vessel's citadel for safety. Fortunately, the pirates abandoned their pursuit, and all crew members remained unharmed. However, approximately four hours later, there were indications that the pirates may have attempted a second boarding. Early on January 14, the 'Maersk Cardiff' was reported drifting in close proximity to the attack location, accompanied by a security boat for precautionary measures.
