Stowaway Rescued from Liferaft Near Robben Island
On February 24, 2013, a dramatic rescue unfolded near Robben Island as the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay station in Cape Town sprang into action. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) alerted the NSRI after the cargo ship 'Safmarine Chachai' spotted a stowaway launching a liferaft and drifting away from their vessel while anchored at 4 Buoy, awaiting entry into the port. The NSRI launched the sea rescue craft 'Spirit of Vodacom,' while the South African Police Services Sea Borderline also responded to the urgent call for assistance. Despite the stowaway's successful launch of the liferaft, he found himself adrift, prompting the cargo ship to seek help from the TNPA. Thanks to favorable conditions, including a full moon, rescuers swiftly located the drifting liferaft east of Robben Island. Police officers successfully retrieved the 19-year-old Libyan man from the liferaft. Onboard the sea rescue craft, NSRI medics conducted a medical assessment and determined that he was suffering from mild dehydration, despite being only in a pair of shorts. After the rescue, the man was escorted to the NSRI sea rescue base where a Netcare 911 ambulance awaited to further evaluate his condition. Fortunately, he was deemed to be in satisfactory health and was subsequently taken to the Table Bay Port Police Station, where he remains in custody. Investigations by police are currently ongoing, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation has been notified of the incident. The liferaft used by the stowaway was returned to the 'Safmarine Chachai,' concluding the operation at 1:30 AM on February 25.
