Collision Involving Maersk Chattogram and HR Turag at Chattogram Port

May 05, 2026 10:01

On May 1, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., two container ships, the 'Maersk Chattogram' and the 'HR Turag' (IMO: 9175779), were involved in a notable allision in the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port. The incident transpired just before the pilot boarding process commenced, with the 'Maersk Chattogram' attempting to navigate past the 'HR Turag' on its port side and subsequently colliding with it on the starboard side. Following the incident, on May 3, the 'Maersk Chattogram' was successfully moved to JCB jetty located in the outer port, while the 'HR Turag' remained secured in position 22° 10' N 091° 47' E. To ensure the safe transit of the 'Maersk Chattogram', port authorities implemented a controlled navigation corridor from the estuary to the New Mooring Container Terminal, which necessitated a temporary halt in general vessel movements. Each ship was supported by three tugs, with additional tug assistance on standby, as operations were closely observed via the Vessel Traffic Management System. This action was critical in averting further delays in cargo operations, as numerous import containers had been stranded since the May 1 incident. The two vessels, together, were transporting nearly 2,900 import containers, with the 'Maersk Chattogram' carrying around 1,878 and the 'HR Turag' about 1,000. While plans were made to unload both ships, they are currently unfit for export operations and must be sent to dry docks for repairs after a thorough damage assessment. Preliminary evaluations indicated that the aft section of the 'Maersk Chattogram' sustained a breach on the starboard side, spanning several meters above the waterline; however, damage was confined to the external hull and the engine and steering mechanisms remained intact. Maersk Bangladesh is expected to announce further decisions regarding the vessels after the unloading process is completed. The incident has led to increased safety measures, including the availability of additional tugs for future operations. In response to the collision, the Mercantile Marine Department has constituted a three-member committee tasked with investigating the circumstances of the crash and providing a report within the next seven working days. Additionally, a joint investigation committee has been organized comprising members from the Department of Shipping and the Ministry of Shipping.
