AP Moller-Maersk's US division has halted maritime operations in the Red Sea following a missile attack involving two of its container vessels on January 24, 2024. The affected ships, 'Maersk Detroit' and 'Maersk Chesapeake', were promptly turned around while under the escort of the US Navy and rerouted to the Gulf of Aden, as reported by the company. During the tense scenario, three anti-ship ballistic missiles were launched towards the 'Maersk Detroit.' Fortunately, one missile fell into the sea, while the US Navy destroyer USS 'Gravely' successfully intercepted the other two. Both vessels were on missions to deliver cargo and humanitarian assistance for the US government and were shielded by naval forces during their transit through the Bab El-Mandeb strait, highlighting the significant role of Maersk Line Ltd. in supporting US military operations with its US-flagged fleet. The crews of both ships reported witnessing close-range explosions, and the naval escort intercepted additional incoming projectiles. Thankfully, the crew, as well as the ship and its cargo, remained safe and unharmed. Following the escalation of hostilities in the region, Maersk Line Ltd. announced a suspension of all transits in the area until further notice. This incident occurred approximately 50 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen, and involved a drone targeting the vessel.
