In a decisive move following the seizure of the Swedish tanker S'tena Impero by Iranian forces on July 19, 2019, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding navigation rights in the region. Approximately three hours after the incident, the US deployed the 'Maersk Chicago,' a container ship operated by Maersk Line Limited, a subsidiary of Maersk, and under the American flag, to traverse the strategically significant Hormuz Strait. To provide a robust protective presence, the 'Maersk Chicago' received the support of several drones and American aircraft, ensuring an unobstructed passage as it made its journey from Jebel Ali to Qasim, with an estimated arrival on July 23. This operation underscores the US's resolve to maintain freedom of navigation in contested waters.

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL), a prominent player in maritime logistics and part of the Maersk Group based in the United States, has recently unveiled a significant investment of $1 billion dedicated to enhancing its fleet with eight state-of-the-art containerships. This strategic upgrade aims to bolster the ocean transportation services offered to US military, government, and commercial clients. The newly acquired vessels, named Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Denver, Detroit, Hartford, Memphis, and Pittsburgh, are set to elevate service efficiency and capacity between the US East Coast and key regions in the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea. Notably, the 'Maersk Chicago' stands out as the first vessel to be reflagged among the group. Collectively, these eight modern ships are approximately a decade younger than their predecessors and will be integrated into the Maritime Security Program (MSP) and the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA), enhancing the overall service quality and operational flexibility.
