Introducing MAERSK CONAKRY: A New Era for West African Shipping
Maersk has officially unveiled the first of 22 groundbreaking WAFMAX container vessels, which are currently under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. These cutting-edge ships, the largest capable of accessing West African ports, are named after Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Among the 22 West Africa MAX (WAFMAX) vessels on order, the Maersk Conakry sets a new standard in fuel efficiency, utilizing 30 percent less fuel per container transported compared to the industry norm in the Asia-Africa trade route. Each vessel will measure 250 meters in length and have a draught of 13.5 meters, adhering to the maximum size permitted for West African ports. Several of these innovative vessels will feature onboard cranes, known as 'geared' vessels, allowing them to dock at ports that lack fixed crane facilities. This initiative marks a significant advancement in maritime logistics for the region, poised to enhance trade capabilities.
