On the morning of May 28, 2021, the container ship 'Maersk Emerald' encountered a mechanical failure while navigating the Suez Canal heading south. The vessel, positioned fifth in a southbound convoy, ran aground near the northern section of the canal. During this grounding incident, several other ships were rerouted through an alternate lane, a contingency made possible by the expansion of the canal that was completed in 2015.

On December 5, a sale involving three notable vessels, the 'Hanjin Europe', 'Hanjin Harmony', and 'Hanjin Africa/Maersk Emerald', took place in Rotterdam, culminating in a $392 acquisition by an undisclosed buyer. The buyer was represented by lawyer Carel van Lynden during this transaction. These ships were previously under the ownership of Resolute Leasing, based in the Isle of Man, and had been chartered to Hanjin Shipping. The auction was initiated due to financial obligations of Resolute Leasing to the German bank HSH Nordbank, which totaled a staggering $1.8 billion. Prior to the auction, these vessels had been stationed off the coast of Scheveningen for several weeks.

The Hanjin Africa made its entrance into Hamburg on October 11, 2023, as it docked at the Euro Quay with a staggering load of 10,000 containers. The vessel was navigating its route from Asia to Europe when the financial troubles of Hanjin Shipping unfolded, causing an extended wait off the Suez Canal for clearance to continue its journey. Prior to arriving in Hamburg, the ship unloaded a portion of its cargo in Algeciras on October 6 before proceeding to its final destination.
