Massive Cocaine Haul Uncovered in Maersk Inverness Container

Aug 08, 2022 10:46

On July 21, 2022, Australian authorities made a staggering discovery aboard the 'Maersk Inverness' when they unearthed 700 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a shipping container. The illicit drugs, valued at an estimated DKK 1.4 billion, were organized into 28 bags, each weighing 25 kilograms. Despite this significant bust, the vessel was permitted to proceed to its next destination, Melbourne, on July 22. According to the shipping manifest, the container was declared to contain wood products, raising questions about the illegal cargo's true origins. Prior to docking in Sydney, where the cocaine was discovered, the 'Maersk Inverness' had previously visited several ports in Central and South America. Australian authorities are actively investigating to identify the individuals who were set to receive this substantial shipment of cocaine in Sydney.

Injury Delays Departure of Maersk Inverness at Port Chalmers

Sep 24, 2018 12:10

On September 23, 2018, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a worker at Port Otago was injured while overseeing the loading operation of the container ship 'Maersk Inverness'. The incident occurred when the worker was accidentally struck by a container. Emergency responders quickly mobilized, using a man-cage suspended from a container crane to safely evacuate the injured individual, who was subsequently transported to Dunedin Hospital for evaluation, despite being able to walk on his own. The injuries sustained by the worker were classified as moderate, prompting an immediate halt to the loading activities on the Maersk Inverness. Loading operations were not resumed until 7:00 a.m. on September 24, resulting in a delay that pushed the ship's departure to around noon, roughly 24 hours behind schedule. The incident has attracted the attention of investigators from Maritime New Zealand, who have dispatched a team to Port Chalmers to conduct an inquiry into the event.
