113 Migrants Rescued Near Gavdos in Coordinated Effort

Jul 28, 2025 10:58

In a remarkable rescue operation, the 'Maersk Izmir', sailing from Port Said to London Gateway Port, discovered 24 migrants stranded on a dinghy south of Gavdos on the evening of July 24, 2025. The crew promptly assisted the castaways and brought them to Karave Port in Gavdos, where they were met by a Greek Coast Guard Patrol boat that ensured their safe disembarkation. The following morning, on July 25, the Greek Coast Guard continued its life-saving efforts, rescuing an additional 35 migrants from another dinghy in the waters south of Gavdos. Earlier that same day, a patrol vessel, working in tandem with a Frontex vessel, spotted a wooden dinghy carrying 54 migrants. The Frontex team successfully took onboard 33 individuals, while the patrol vessel rescued the other 29. In total, 113 migrants were safely transported to Karave Port and subsequently transferred to the temporary accommodation area of Agia. The Central Port Authority of Chania has initiated a preliminary investigation into these incidents, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced in these treacherous waters.

Mar 10, 2012 08:14

Maersk Line is set to commence a new liner service, designated as MISA, that will streamline connectivity between vital ports in the Middle East and South Africa. This innovative service will deploy a fleet of six vessels, each with a capacity of approximately 3,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The MISA service is scheduled to kick off in early April, enhancing logistical efficiencies across the region. The planned port rotation includes Durban, Port Elizabeth, Port Louis, Jebel Ali, Salalah, Port Reunion, and Toamasina, before returning to Durban, thereby establishing a comprehensive route network. The inaugural sailing will be conducted by the Maersk Izmir, which is set to depart from Jebel Ali on April 7. In addition, Maersk has unveiled its Mawingu Express—a direct weekly service linking India, the Middle East, and East Africa—set to launch on April 10. This dual initiative underscores Maersk's commitment to strengthening maritime connections in these strategically important regions.
