Brave Rescue at Sea: 'Maersk Karachi' Saves Crew of Sunken AHTS 'Leo'

Mar 05, 2026 09:48

In a dramatic maritime rescue, the container ship 'Maersk Karachi' successfully saved nine crew members from the sinking AHTS 'Leo' (IMO: 9007142) off the coast of South Africa on March 1, 2026. The incident occurred approximately 80 nautical miles from the Western Cape region in the early hours, as 'Leo', carrying a total of 18 crew members, found itself in dire straits amidst stormy seas, roughly 18 nautical miles offshore while it was returning from Durban to Lagos. The distress signal was activated by 'Leo' on February 28 at 5:02 p.m., prompting the South African Search and Rescue (SASAR) operations to mobilize. A mayday relay was subsequently transmitted via Cape Town Radio, alerting nearby vessels to assist. In response, the crew abandoned ship into four life rafts just before the vessel went down. Additional support came from two nearby merchant vessels: the ro-ro m/v 'Grand Hero' (IMO: 9339806), heading from Gothenburg to Port Elizabeth, and a local fishing vessel named 'Boronia'. Both vessels participated in the search and rescue operation under challenging conditions, which included强 winds, high swells, and limited visibility. 'Grand Hero' rescued three survivors, while 'Boronia' tragically recovered one deceased crew member. To enhance the operation, a helicopter was deployed to cover the search area from above. Of the initial 18 crew members aboard 'Leo', 12 were successfully rescued and transported to Port Elizabeth. There, officials from the Nigerian High Commission were prepared to receive them. Unfortunately, one crew member was confirmed deceased, and five others remain missing, prompting ongoing search efforts approximately 80 nautical miles south of Mossel Bay. On March 2, at sunset, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) announced a suspension of search and rescue operations. The surviving crew members were provided with medical attention and support upon their arrival in Port Elizabeth. The identification process for the recovered deceased crew member is currently underway, facilitated by the relevant authorities. Throughout this operation, maritime authorities deployed multiple vessels and aerial resources, coordinated through the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town, to ensure a comprehensive rescue mission. A navigation warning remains in effect, alerting mariners in the area of potential debris from the sunken vessel and the presence of unrecovered life rafts. Mariners are urged to report any sightings of debris, pollution, or individuals in the water to MRCC Cape Town or Cape Town Radio.
