Maersk Kinloss Saves Stranded Iranian Mariners in Dramatic Rescue

Dec 25, 2019 16:43

On December 18, 2019, the container ship 'Maersk Kinloss' performed a heroic rescue operation, saving three Iranian mariners who had been adrift at sea for several weeks. The incident came to light when Maersk Line notified the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command of the mariners' plight. The operation was facilitated through NATO's Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS), an organization established to manage maritime emergencies. Following their rescue, the mariners were safely transferred to the Omani Coast Guard, who arranged for their return to Iran.

Fire and Explosion on Maersk Kinloss: Investigation Underway After Dangerous Load Detected

Jul 26, 2012 04:48

On July 15, 2012, the container ship Maersk Kinloss docked at Iliychevsk, Ukraine, after a journey from Konstanza, Romania, carrying a total of 2,082 containers. Among these, 1,439 were transit containers, while 643 were scheduled to be unloaded in Iliychevsk. However, the situation took a precarious turn on July 17 during cargo offloading when dockworkers discovered a container exhibiting clear signs of fire and explosion. This particular container was found to contain aluminum phosphide, a hazardous material known for its potential risk. The inspection revealed that the top of the container had been blown off, and its sides were notably bloated, indicating significant damage to its contents and the surrounding containers. Investigations later showed that the Maersk Kinloss was carrying a total of three containers with dangerous cargoes, including hydrofluoric acid and the aforementioned aluminum phosphide. Alarmingly, two of these containers were improperly stacked within the hold, contradicting safety regulations meant to manage the transport of such hazardous substances. Emergency responders in Ilyichevsk swiftly mobilized to address the situation, deploying a hazardous materials team to assess the vessel and surrounding port areas for any residual traces of phosphate. Plans were initiated for the safe disposal of the remaining cargo in specialized hazardous waste storage. At present, the Maersk Kinloss remains docked in Iliychevsk while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Local media has published images showcasing the damaged container, the wrecked cargo, and chemistry specialists assessing the situation onboard the vessel.
