Working Conditions Aboard the Maersk-Lamanai

On April 8, 2020, a 38-year-old crew member aboard the container ship 'Maersk Lamanai' was urgently medevaced while at the Algeciras roads, exhibiting symptoms consistent with coronavirus. At 3:30 p.m., the Spanish maritime rescue agency, Salvamento Marítimo, swiftly deployed the SAR vessel 'Salvamar Denébola' to assist the ship, which had set sail from Barcelona and was anchored at the Delta location near Getares beach, approximately four miles offshore. The patient was successfully transported to Saladillo dock in Algeciras, where an ambulance was on standby to expedite his transfer to Quirónsalud hospital in Los Barrios for medical evaluation. As of April 9, the 'Maersk Lamanai' remained anchored in the port while awaiting further developments. Fortunately, the crew member, who serves as the second captain of the vessel, was later tested for COVID-19, with the results returning negative. With this positive outcome, the ship is set to resume its journey as planned, with a scheduled stopover in Tenerife. The crew member will remain hospitalized until he makes a full recovery.
