Maersk Ships Navigate New Route Amid Red Sea Threats

Jan 05, 2024 11:36

In response to increasing threats from Houthi militia attacks in the Red Sea, the shipping giant Maersk has made the strategic decision to reroute four of its container vessels. These ships, including the 'Maersk Genoa', 'Maersk Londrina', 'Ebba Maersk', and 'Gjertrud Maersk', are currently anchored south of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but are set to journey around the Cape of Good Hope towards Asia, avoiding the volatile waters for safety. This strategic shift reflects Maersk's commitment to ensuring the safety of its vessels and crews amid ongoing unrest in the region. The company confirmed that the adjusted routing will now see these ships navigate via the Suez Canal once again before embarking on the lengthy journey around the African continent. Additionally, the 'Maersk Utah', which is also located in the same vicinity, remains on its original course but will steer clear of the Yemeni coast as a precautionary measure. With maritime security becoming an increasingly pressing issue in volatile areas, Maersk's proactive approach illustrates the challenges shipping companies face in maintaining safe and efficient trade routes. As the situation in the Red Sea evolves, industry stakeholders will be watching closely how these developments impact global logistics and shipping operations.

Maersk Londrina Receives Repairs in Ngqura After Fire Incident

May 21, 2015 09:39

The container vessel 'Maersk Londrina,' identified by IMO number 9322181, has been docked at Ngqura since May 12 for essential repairs following a fire incident on April 25. During its transit between China and South America, with a stop in South Africa, a container aboard the ship exploded approximately 620 miles from Port Louis, igniting a fire in the number 7 hold. The crew, comprised of 32 members, valiantly battled the blaze for several hours before the vessel was ultimately left adrift. Utilizing the onboard CO² system, they managed to contain the fire. However, the ship's master made the prudent decision to divert to Port Louis for a thorough evaluation of the damage. To aid in cooling the vessel, the tug 'Ionian Sea Fos' utilized its water hoses. Upon arrival at Port Louis, it was discovered that smoldering conditions persisted in the hold, prompting intervention from a team of specialists from Svitzer Salvage who deployed additional CO² to extinguish any remaining fire. Fortunately, aside from some damaged containers, no significant harm was reported, though an assessment of nearby cargo was deemed necessary. This situation may lead the ship's owners to declare General Average. Currently, the 'Maersk Londrina' is stationed at the local container terminal in Ngqura, undergoing required repairs to ensure her readiness for future voyages.

Fire Erupts Aboard Maersk Londrina Near Port Louis

Apr 28, 2015 09:36

On April 25, 2015, the cargo vessel Maersk Londrina experienced a significant explosion and fire in one of its cargo holds at approximately 3:00 PM. The incident took place in the Indian Ocean, positioned at 15°44'S and 068°48'E, about 700 nautical miles northeast of Port Louis and 400 miles northeast of Rodrigues Island. The crew, comprising 32 members, received a distress call from the ship regarding the fire that started on deck at 7:25 PM, prompting immediate action from the National Coast Guard (NCG). Despite attempts to extinguish the flames using onboard equipment, the situation called for more support. The NCG rapidly mobilized resources, deploying an air unit with a Dornier aircraft that took off from Rodrigues early the next morning, along with the patrol boat Barracuda, which had been conducting missions near Rodrigues. The salvage tug Ionian Sea Foss also joined the firefighting efforts near Mauritius. By the morning of April 26, the crew reported that the situation aboard Maersk Londrina was stabilizing, with significantly reduced smoke levels as they began investigating the fire's origin. After drifting for several hours, the vessel resumed its journey but altered its destination to Port Louis. Maersk Londrina successfully entered Mauritius' territorial waters at 4:00 AM on April 27 and docked at Port Louis at 11:00 AM. Firefighting vessels continued to monitor the situation, spraying water onto the cargo to ensure safety. The ship was on a voyage from Tanjung Pelepas, where it had departed on April 18, bound for various ports in Brazil.
