Coast Guard Conducts Successful Medevac 50 Miles Off Galveston
On August 27, 2024, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully performed a medical evacuation of a 20-year-old woman from the 'Maersk Ohio', located 50 nautical miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas. The Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received an urgent request for assistance at approximately 5 p.m. from the vessel's master, indicating that a Merchant Marine cadet had suffered a significant injury to her arm. Given the circumstances, the case was promptly escalated to the Coast Guard District 8 command center, which oversees the region. District 8 watchstanders consulted with a duty flight surgeon, who determined that a medevac was essential. A Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, already in the air, was redirected to carry out the operation. The highly trained crew successfully hoisted the injured cadet and transported her to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
