A substantial haul of approximately 25 kg of cocaine was discovered aboard the vessel 'San Clemente' during an inspection on December 15, 2018. This operation took place while the ship was docked at the DP World terminal in Callao, Peru. Authorities retrieved the illicit drugs, which were concealed in a black bag containing numerous packages wrapped in black foil, and confirmed that the substance was cocaine alkaloid. In addition to the surface inspection, divers conducted a thorough underwater examination of the vessel. At the time of the seizure, the 'San Clemente' was en route from Buenaventura, Colombia, destined for Puerto Angamos, Chile. Since December 16, the ship has remained anchored at coordinates 12° 1.38' S and 077° 11.83' W, off the Callao port.

Hamburg Süd Celebrates Launch of 'San Clemente' with Christening Ceremony in Singapore

On November 14, 2023, Hamburg Süd proudly marked the christening of its latest container ship, the 'San Clemente', at a festive ceremony held at the Marina Bay Cruise Center in Singapore. This significant event brought together clients and industry partners to witness the official naming of the new vessel. Wietske Willemijn Wage, the spouse of Niels Wage—Vice President of Marketing Freight & Potash at BHP Billiton, one of Hamburg Süd's key clients—served as the ship's sponsor. The ceremony featured the presence of Peter Frederiksen, a member of Hamburg Süd's Executive Board, highlighting the company's commitment to innovation and excellence in maritime operations. The 'San Clemente' is the latest addition to Hamburg Süd's esteemed 'San' class series, built at the renowned Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. This vessel boasts an impressive container slot capacity of 9,034 TEU, along with 1,370 reefer slots for temperature-sensitive cargo. Like its sister ship, the 'San Christobal', which was commissioned in August, the 'San Clemente' will enhance services between Asia and the East Coast of South America.
