Coast Guard Rescues Injured Crew Member from Maersk Santana off Virginia Beach
On January 2, 2016, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully conducted a medical evacuation (medevac) of a 28-year-old man from the vessel 'Maersk Santana', located approximately 20 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The distress call was received by Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at 10:20 a.m., reporting that the individual had sustained burns on both his arms and legs. Swiftly responding to the situation, a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City took off at 11:16 a.m. to assist. They arrived at the scene by 11:39 a.m. and efficiently transferred the injured crew member to the helicopter for medical care. The team then transported him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, landing at 12:26 p.m., where he was handed over to emergency medical services.
