Between November 30 and December 30, 2024, U.S. Navy destroyers USS 'Stockdale' (DDG-106) and USS 'O'Kane' (DDG-77) successfully intercepted a series of hostile actions by Houthi rebels targeting commercial shipping in the Gulf of Aden. On this critical mission to protect maritime security, the destroyers shot down a total of six threats, including three anti-ship ballistic missiles, three attack drones, and one anti-ship cruise missile, while escorting vital vessels like the oil tanker 'Stena Impeccable', the container ship 'Maersk Saratoga', and the bulk carrier 'Liberty Grace'. Following the defensive operations, all three vessels docked safely at the port of Djibouti on December 2, underscoring the effectiveness of U.S. naval presence in safeguarding commercial maritime routes in this strategically significant region.

In a positive turn of events, the crew of the hijacked Singaporean container ship Safmarine Kuramo has been released unharmed following a series of efforts by Nigerian authorities. The vessel was overtaken off the coast of Nigeria earlier in the week, prompting immediate international concern. According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), they were alerted to the situation late on Friday night, February 5. The crew, consisting of 25 members hailing from various countries including the Philippines, South Africa, India, the United Kingdom, and Thailand, were en route from Pointe Noire, Congo to Port Onne, Nigeria when the incident occurred. Following their release, the Safmarine Kuramo, which is operated by Maersk Line A/S, is currently anchored near the Bonny River delta, close to the passage leading into Port Onne.
