Container Ship Grounded in Suez Canal: The Maersk Shams Incident
On July 5, 2016, at 3:30 PM, the container ship 'Maersk Shams' encountered a grounding incident while navigating through the Suez Canal. The vessel, which was making its way from Algeciras to Aqaba, ran aground at kilometer mark 133 in the southern section of the canal while participating in a southbound convoy. The 'Maersk Shams' was the 13th ship in a lineup of 33 vessels, and several other ships in the convoy faced delays as well due to the incident. Efforts to refloat the grounded boxship began at 5:00 PM when tugboats arrived on the scene. Their tireless work paid off at 9:00 PM, allowing the 'Maersk Shams' to successfully resume its journey. The vessel reached the Suez anchorage late at night, around midnight, marking the end of a tense episode in one of the world's most crucial maritime routes.
