Dardanelles Strait Traffic Halted Following Engine Trouble of Maersk Utah

Jan 29, 2026 13:54

On January 28, 2026, maritime traffic through the Dardanelles Strait was halted in both directions due to an engine malfunction aboard the container ship 'Maersk Utah.' The vessel was en route from Istanbul to Tanger-Med when the incident occurred near Burhanli. The captain promptly informed the Dardanelles Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) of the situation. In response, the tugboat 'Kurtarma 20' (IMO: 9995117), operated by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, was dispatched to provide assistance. The VTS communicated with other vessels in the region, declaring a closure of the strait for all shipping movements as the 'Maersk Utah' awaited towing to a secure anchorage. Maersk Implements New Routing for Vessels Amid Red Sea Safety Concerns

Jan 05, 2024 11:37

In light of the ongoing threats posed by Houthi militia attacks in the Red Sea, global shipping giant Maersk has made the strategic decision to reroute four of its container vessels. The 'Maersk Genoa', 'Maersk Londrina', 'Ebba Maersk', and 'Gjertrud Maersk' will navigate through the Suez Canal before embarking on a longer journey around the Cape of Good Hope to ensure the safety of their routes towards Asia. These vessels had been anchored south of the port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, waiting for conditions to improve amidst the escalating conflicts coming from Yemen. According to Maersk's updated schedule, these ships will now bypass the potentially dangerous waters of Yemen entirely. Additionally, another vessel, the 'Maersk Utah', which remains in the vicinity, has not yet been rerouted but will also avoid passing near Yemen as a precautionary measure.

Maersk Utah Crew Celebrated for Heroic Sea Rescue of Refugees

Nov 26, 2013 21:52

The crew of the Maersk Utah has received the prestigious Marinersโ€™ Plaque for their extraordinary efforts in a life-saving operation at sea. This commendation was bestowed upon the dedicated officers and crew during the Admiral of the Ocean Seas (AOTOS) award dinner held on November 15, 2013, in New York City. The honor was specifically in recognition of their pivotal role in the rescue of 83 Syrian refugees. On the evening of August 9, 2013, approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Sicily, the Maersk Utah received a distress signal concerning a stranded small boat. Commanding the vessel was Master Robert H. Sienel, accompanied by Chief Mate Joe Single, Second Mate Bryan Phillips, and Third Mate Thomas Komenda. The crew swiftly changed course and accelerated their journey to reach the distressed group before dark. At precisely 8:33 p.m., the Maersk Utah positioned itself alongside the small craft, measuring about 15 meters in length, which was crammed with individuals of diverse ages and conditions. In a remarkable display of seamanship, the container ship maneuvered to provide a protective barrier against the mounting wind and sea, all while the Italian Coast Guard prepared for a rescue operation. The Maersk Utah remained by the stranded boat for an arduous 9.5 hours, offering shelter until the Italian Coast Guard could execute a safe rescue. The first Coast Guard vessel responded at approximately 1:28 a.m.; however, it lacked the capability to navigate the rough waters successfully. Following instructions, the Maersk Utah continued to shield both boats while awaiting a more substantial rescue vessel. At 3:54 a.m., a second Italian Coast Guard ship arrived and commenced the rescue, ultimately ensuring the safe retrieval of all 83 refugees by 10:00 a.m. The Maersk Utah was thereafter cleared to resume its journey to Algeciras, having played a critical part in this significant humanitarian effort.
