Houthi Forces Claim Responsibility for Attack on Maersk Yorktown
On April 24, 2024, an explosion was reported in the waters approximately 72 nautical miles southeast of Djibouti, leading to significant concerns over maritime security in the region. A spokesperson from Houthi forces claimed responsibility for the incident, asserting that both the 'Maersk Yorktown' and the 'MSC Veracruz' were targeted. The spokesperson controversially labeled the MSC vessel as an ‘Israeli ship’, while also alleging involvement of a U.S. naval vessel in the events surrounding the Maersk Yorktown, which operates under a contract with the U.S. military. In response, U.S. Central Command confirmed its role in intercepting one anti-ship ballistic missile that had been fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, suggesting it was directed at the Maersk Yorktown, which was carrying 18 American and four Greek crew members at the time. The U.S. Central Command also reported the successful destruction of four airborne unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Houthi-held regions within Yemen. Notably, this attack follows another incident from April 13, when the Houthis launched an anti-ship ballistic missile from the Gulf of Aden, raising alarm regarding ongoing tensions and threats to shipping routes in the area.
US Navy Takes Down Missile Aimed at Maersk Ship in Gulf of Aden
On April 8, 2024, the USS Laboon successfully intercepted and destroyed an anti-ship ballistic missile launched by Houthi militants from Yemen, which was aimed at the Maersk Yorktown as it navigated the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Navy destroyer was providing critical escort to the vessel when the missile threat was identified, affirming its potential danger to not only American and coalition forces but also to international merchant shipping in the area. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no reported injuries or damages. In a statement, Yemen’s Houthi militants acknowledged that their missile was indeed targeting the AP Moller-Maersk ship. The group also announced the initiation of two additional missile operations against nearby Mediterranean Shipping Company vessels, further escalating tensions in the region.
