Heroic Escape: Filipino Seafarer Describes Harrowing Attack on 'Magic Seas'

Jul 17, 2025 12:35

In a gripping account, Cocoy, a 38-year-old Filipino seafarer, shared his terrifying experience during the recent Houthi assault on the cargo vessel, 'Magic Seas'. At the time of the attack, Cocoy was enjoying some much-needed rest in his cabin when a frantic announcement from the captain shattered the calm: "We are under attack." What he initially perceived as a mere thudding sound soon morphed into the chilling realization of gunfire, with the ship's security engaging in a fierce firefight against Houthi rebels, who had approached in swift boats from multiple directions. With urgency, the crew rushed to the muster station—designated as the safest haven should the ship be struck. The situation intensified as speedboats encircled the vessel, and a larger craft carrying approximately 15 assailants attempted to board. Thanks to the bravery and quick response of the three armed Sri Lankan guards on board, the intruders were repelled. For nearly five grueling hours, the crew remained huddled in the muster station, relying on the guards to fend off the relentless onslaught. A Houthi spokesperson later revealed that the attack had involved the deployment of five ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and three drones, heightening the crew's sense of peril. As water began to flood the ship, the critical decision was made to abandon the 'Magic Seas'. The lifeboat was deployed, and all 22 crew members evacuated the perilous situation. Cocoy and his fellow seafarers floated for three harrowing hours in the turbulent Red Sea before being rescued by a passing Panama-flagged container ship. Tragically, by the time they were plucked from the water, the 'Magic Seas' had disappeared from sight, lost to the depths of the sea.

Filipino Crew of 'Magic Seas' Completes Safe Return Home

Jul 14, 2025 12:37

The last group of Filipino crew members from the 'Magic Seas' safely returned to the Philippines on the evening of July 12, marking the end of their repatriation journey. The final contingent of 11 sailors arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, completing the homecoming of all 17 Filipino seafarers who had been aboard the distressed vessel. Following an attack five days prior, the crew successfully evacuated the ship and were rescued by the passing container vessel m/v 'Safeen Prism'. Upon their return, the sailors received extensive support from the Philippine government, which included PHP75,000 in financial assistance via the Department of Migrant Workers’ (DMW) AKSYON Fund and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) Emergency Repatriation Fund. Additionally, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) offered health checks and training vouchers to facilitate their reintegration into civilian life. Immediate reintegration services, medical assessments, and psychosocial counseling are also being provided. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is expected to extend an extra P10,000 cash aid for further support. Meanwhile, eight Filipino sailors from the vessel 'Eternity C' have been rescued; arrangements for their return to the Philippines are still underway as they need to be transported to a safe harbor. The Philippine government remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the situation and closely coordinating with international partners to ensure the safe and prompt return of affected Filipino nationals. Recent satellite imagery has revealed extensive oil slicks in the vicinity where the 'Magic Seas' and 'Eternity C' sank.
