Tanker Rescues Family from Distressed Yacht Off A Coruña Coast

May 04, 2023 12:23

On May 3, 2023, the 'Maingas', a tanker traveling from Antwerp to Le Havre, played a crucial role in rescuing a French family stranded on their sailing yacht approximately 140 kilometers northwest of A Coruña. The family's distress signal prompted immediate action, leading to the deployment of the SAR helicopter Helimer 402 from Alvedro. The alarming radio beacon was activated around 6 a.m., alerting authorities to the emergency situation. Upon arrival at the scene, the helicopter crew discovered three individuals aboard the vessel: a French man and his two teenage daughters. One of the girls had suffered injuries to her head and hand after falling onboard. Initially, she hesitated to leave the yacht despite her injuries. Later, the family reactivated their radio beacon due to a malfunction with the rudder, prompting the 'Maingas' to intervene and rescue them around 3:24 p.m. The yacht was left adrift at that time. However, shortly after, at approximately 4:10 p.m., the family requested evacuation once again, leading to another deployment of the Helimer helicopter. They successfully transported the family from the tanker to A Coruña. Emergency medical services were waiting when they arrived, with the injured girl being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital at 6:30 p.m. Following the rescue operation, the 'Maingas' resumed its journey, with an estimated time of arrival set for May 8.
