The arrival of the new passenger and cargo ship, 'Mapinduzi II,' has sparked joy among the residents of Zanzibar. Docking at the main port from South Korea, the ship's late arrival—approximately six months behind schedule with an expected date of June 25—failed to diminish the excitement surrounding its launch. Minister of Finance, Mr. Omar Yussuf Mzee, was among the large gathering at Malindi Port, celebrating this significant milestone for the community. The official inauguration is set for next Tuesday, December 8, with President Ali Mohamed Shein slated to preside over the ceremony. Frequent traveler to Pemba Island, Ms. Mwanajuma Khamis, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "We are happy to have the ship," as the vessel made its first appearance in Zanzibar. The welcoming committee also included Deputy Minister Mr. Issa Haji Ussi and Dr. Juma Malik Akili, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communication, who, alongside other officials and journalists, greeted the ship's arrival with great enthusiasm. In response to speculation regarding the vessel's condition, officials reassured the public that 'Mapinduzi II' is indeed brand new, contrary to rumors suggesting it was second-hand. With the capacity to transport 1,200 passengers and 200 tonnes of cargo, this new addition is considered a vital asset for the people of Zanzibar, particularly following the tragic marine accidents of 2011 and 2012 that highlighted the need for improved safety standards in maritime transport.
