Coastguard Operations: Dual Migrant Rescues from Paddle Boards Near Spain
On September 25, 2022, a remarkable rescue operation took place in the waters off the southern coast of Spain. At approximately 10:15 a.m., the Search and Rescue (SAR) vessel 'Salvamar Denébola' successfully located and rescued a sub-Saharan migrant who was stranded on a paddle surfboard, four nautical miles southeast of Punta Carnero. Just over an hour later, at 11:21 a.m., the 'María Zambrano' SAR boat sprang into action to assist another individual, a North African man, who was found on a separate paddle surfboard, two nautical miles south of Punta Europa. Following their rescues, both migrants were safely transferred to the 'Salvamar Arcturus' (MMSI: 225986507), which transported them to Algeciras, ensuring their safety amid the vast waters.
Rescue Operation Launched After Crew Member Overboard Near Mazagón
On January 18, 2022, a rescue operation was initiated after a crew member from the Spanish fishing vessel 'Bienvenido Primero - ON 3-CA-1-4-99', based in Rota, fell overboard. This incident occurred approximately five nautical miles off the coast of Matalascañas, specifically three miles southeast of Mazagón in Huelva. In response to the emergency distress call, Salvamento Marítimo quickly mobilized the rescue vessel 'María Zambrano' to commence search and rescue efforts. The operation saw the addition of several other key rescue assets, including the SAR boats 'Guardamar Talía' and 'Salvamar Illes Pitiuses', along with the Helimer 204 helicopter and the patrol vessel 'Rio Saja'. Coordination for the search was handled by the CCS Huelva. Additionally, divers from the Special Group for Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard joined the operation, although their efforts have yet to yield results.
