In a significant development, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has confirmed that the 'Marianne Danica', a vessel transporting a large shipment of arms to Israel, was refused entry into the port of Cartagena. On October 14, 2022, a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was initiated by the Greek Coast Guard for a distressing situation involving a sailing vessel located approximately 24 nautical miles westsouthwest of Paxos. The operation successfully resulted in the rescue of 88 individuals, coordinated with assistance from the vessel 'Marianne Danica' and the cruise ship 'Norwegian Gem', during the evening hours. Following the rescue, the migrants were transported to the port of Igoumenitsa, where they were subsequently transferred to a patrol boat for further processing. Authorities from the Igoumenitsa Port Authority conducted a preliminary investigation, with support from the Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate (DAPTHAS). This investigation revealed the presence of four Turkish national human traffickers aboard the sailing vessel, who were promptly arrested for violating Article 30 of Law 4251/14 and Article 83 of Law 3386/05. The traffickers had reportedly aimed to transport 84 undocumented individuals from the Turkish coastline to Italy, with a price tag of €8,000 to €9,000 per person, all while putting their lives in serious jeopardy. The Marianne Danica, a vessel chartered by the World Food Programme (WFP), has successfully arrived at Misrata port, providing a vital humanitarian lifeline for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Libya. Docking yesterday, the ship transported over 600 metric tons of crucial food supplies, including wheat flour, vegetable oil, and High Energy Biscuits, sufficient to support more than 40,000 people for an entire month. In addition to food, Marianne Danica is also delivering essential medical supplies in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). Among the onboard personnel are two dedicated doctors, who disembarked in Misrata to aid those in need.
