Maersk Line Faces Challenges in Maximizing Capacity of Mega Container Ships
Danish maritime powerhouse Maersk Line is encountering significant hurdles in fully loading its groundbreaking Triple-E mega container vessels. The issue stems from the limited infrastructure available in Asia, with only two ports—Yantian and Tanjung Pelepas—equipped to handle the sheer size and capacity of these colossal ships, which can carry up to 18,270 containers. According to Thomas Riber Knudsen, head of Maersk Line’s Asia and Pacific operations, the company will not be able to achieve full ship loads until the latter part of 2014, as major European ports continue to lack the necessary facilities. 'Currently, we're only managing to load around 16,000 containers per voyage,' Knudsen stated in an interview with Lloyd’s List, emphasizing the urgency for major ports such as Algeciras, Shanghai, and Rotterdam to upgrade their capabilities. At present, Maersk Line operates seven of these extraordinary Triple-E vessels, which are set to gradually replace smaller ships on key trade routes connecting Asia with Northern Europe. This strategic shift is expected to enhance efficiency and capacity in the shipping industry. Source: Copenhagen Post
