On February 4, 2024, the Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre (JMICC) of the Pakistan Navy responded to a critical distress signal from the tugboat 'SAS 5', which was making its way from Debhol to Sharjah. Having departed Debhol on February 1, the vessel had encountered significant trouble, becoming disabled due to generator malfunctions around 167 nautical miles southeast of Karachi, off the Indian coastline. The Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), dispatched a team to assist the nine Indian crew members stranded aboard the tug. The operation commenced with a Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft to effectively pinpoint the vessel's location, followed by a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission led by the Pakistan Maritime Security Ship PMSS 'Kashmir', which was operating in the vicinity as part of ongoing maritime security efforts. Once the rescue team reached the disabled vessel, efforts were made to secure it alongside; within three hours, repairs addressing the generator issue were successful. Beyond immediate technical fixes, the crew received essential provisions, including medical care, fresh drinking water, and meals to ensure their well-being. With these supports in place, the 'SAS 5' was able to continue its journey towards Sharjah, marking a successful turnaround in an urgent maritime challenge.
