On the night of February 9, 2022, a swift medical evacuation unfolded aboard the container vessel 'Marit Maersk' as an injured crew member faced a severe injury. The vessel was navigating toward the Eurogate at Strom Quay in Bremerhaven, having arrived from Gdansk, when the 25-year-old Indian sailor suffered a serious cut that jeopardized his finger. After a thorough consultation involving the ship's master, Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), the decision was made to proceed with a medevac. To ensure safety amidst the busy shipping traffic, the 'Marit Maersk' reduced its speed, allowing for a more efficient rescue operation by the DGzRS lifeboat 'Theo Fischer' stationed in Bremerhaven. Battling winds at six Beaufort and swells of approximately one meter, the lifeboat successfully navigated its way to the distressed vessel in just over an hour. Upon arrival, the lifeboat maneuvered alongside the 'Marit Maersk' for a secure transfer. The injured crew member was swiftly transferred to the lifeboat and then transported back to Bremerhaven, where he was handed over to an ambulance awaiting to take him to the hospital. Thanks to the rapid response of the lifeboat crew and the maritime authorities, the injured sailor is likely to receive the emergency surgical care needed to prevent the loss of his finger.
