In a significant milestone for the Port of Rotterdam, the impressive 18,300 TEU EEE-Class vessel, Marstal Maersk, made its debut at the newly expanded APM Terminals Maasvlakte II on the morning of January 5th. This vessel, measuring an astounding 399 meters (1,310 feet) in length and 59 meters (194 feet) in width, proudly holds the title of the largest ship to ever dock at this state-of-the-art facility. Marstal Maersk is a part of Maersk Line’s AE10 Asia/Europe service, with its next scheduled port of call in APM Terminals Tangier, Morocco. The recent opening of the Maasvlakte II terminal marks the beginning of its testing phase, leading up to regular weekly operations set to start in February. APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has been engineered to become the safest and most innovative automated container terminal globally. With the truck gates officially opening last month, landside commercial operations are now underway. Additionally, APM Terminals has prioritized sustainability initiatives, recently signing a two-year agreement to utilize wind-generated electricity for nearly all terminal equipment. This includes the deployment of battery-powered Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) that facilitate container transport across the terminal and a newly acquired fleet of 35 Nissan e-NV200 electric vehicles for staff mobility within the facility.
