Disruption in Service: 'Martha’s Vineyard' Cancels Morning Trip Due to Valve Issues
On June 23, 2024, the ferry 'Martha’s Vineyard' experienced an operational halt, leading to the cancellation of its scheduled morning return journey from Woods Hole. This interruption was necessitated by the discovery of a faulty valve connecting the fuel storage tank to the daytime fuel tank. Due to the situation, the usual refueling procedures for vessels during daytime operations have been altered, resulting in extended refueling times. Prioritizing passenger safety and service reliability, the decision was made to cancel the trip to ensure adequate fuel reserves for the crossing. Repair efforts are already in progress to secure a replacement valve and restore normal service as swiftly as possible.
Crew Member of 'Martha's Vineyard' Tests Positive for COVID-19
In a recent development, a crew member aboard the ferry 'Martha's Vineyard' has been confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19. This individual last operated on the ferry during the watch that commenced with the noon trip from Woods Hole on February 12, 2021, and concluded with the arrival back in Woods Hole on February 13 at 11:30 a.m. Following symptoms of illness, the crew member sought testing for the coronavirus, with the positive result coming in on February 20, 2021. Upon receiving the test results, he promptly informed the Steamship Authority. The authority has since alerted fellow crew members who may have been in close contact with him. Fortunately, the incident is not expected to result in any operational changes or disruptions for the ferry services.
Two Steamship Authority Crew Members Test Positive for COVID-19
In a recent development, two crew members from the Steamship Authority have contracted COVID-19, raising concerns about health safety protocols. One positive case was reported from the ferry 'Martha’s Vineyard,' while the other came from the 'Nantucket.' The crew member aboard the 'Martha’s Vineyard' last operated during a route shift starting at noon on January 10, 2021, and concluding at 11:30 a.m. on January 11. After being identified as having close contact with known COVID-19 cases, this crew member underwent testing, which confirmed a positive result. Simultaneously, the crew member from the 'Nantucket' last worked a shift commencing on January 7 at 2:45 p.m. and finishing on January 8 at 2:15 p.m. Following this period, he learned that a family member with whom he had close contact had tested positive for the virus. He soon exhibited symptoms and tested positive as well. In response to these incidents, the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment, along with Cape Cod Healthcare, are mobilizing efforts to provide COVID-19 testing for other employees on both ferries who may have been in proximity to the affected crew members. For safety reasons, these employees will be prohibited from returning to work until they receive a negative test result or are cleared by a qualified medical professional, as outlined in an official release.
