Working Conditions Aboard the Mastronikos

On January 15, 2025, a maritime vessel was beached in the port town of Aliaga. The location, known for its ship recycling facilities, has seen increased activity in recent years. This event adds another chapter to Aliaga's reputation as a hub for decommissioned ships looking for new beginnings.

On November 26, 2020, the Port Authority of Kavala received an urgent notification regarding the grounding of the 'Mastronikos' in sandy shallows near Ammoglossa in Keramoti, Kavala. The vessel had departed from Nea Karvali, en route to Kalamaki, Corinth, carrying a substantial load of 2,003 tonnes of fertilizer and with a crew of nine onboard. In response to the incident, a patrol boat and tugboat were quickly dispatched to the scene, successfully assisting in the extraction of the 'Mastronikos' from the shallows. The ship was subsequently escorted safely into the port of Keramoti. Following the incident, the Port Authority of Kavala imposed a ban on the vessel's departure until a class maintenance certificate was presented by the attending classification society. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries or environmental pollution.

On January 16, 2016, a maritime incident unfolded in the port of Piraeus when the cargo vessel m/v 'La Joie' collided with the incoming ship 'Ahti R'. The collision occurred in the afternoon under challenging stormy weather conditions. Notably, both vessels were operating with a pilot on board during the incident. Although the two ships were not on crossing courses, it is believed that the significant swell played a crucial role in compromising their steering abilities, leading to the unfortunate clash. Fortunately, while both vessels sustained damage in the collision, there were no reports of any leaks. Following the incident, both ships were detained for thorough investigations and surveys to assess the extent of the damage.
