In a heartbreaking accident at Tianjin Port, Selçuk Elibol, the 1st Officer of the bulk carrier 'Mathilde Oldendorff', tragically lost his life on January 29, 2022. The incident occurred as he attempted to read the ship's drafts from the pilot ladder positioned on the shore side of the vessel. Due to Covid-19 regulations, local port authorities did not permit him to go ashore, compelling him to carry out the task from the precarious ladder. While performing this critical duty, Elibol slipped and fell onto the pier. Following the incident, the crew was unfortunately restricted from providing immediate assistance. Paramedics arrived promptly but pronounced him dead at the scene. Arrangements are underway to repatriate his body to Turkey after the necessary formalities are completed. The 'Mathilde Oldendorff' had docked at Tianjin Port on January 28 and was scheduled to leave on January 31 at 1 a.m., continuing its journey to Port Hedland, with an estimated time of arrival set for February 15.
