CMA CGM Brazil Rescues Distressed Yacht Off St. Martin

Jun 20, 2018 09:06

In a remarkable display of maritime camaraderie, the container ship 'CMA CGM Brazil' successfully rescued a 46-foot sailboat with two sailors on board, which was in distress approximately 315 miles east-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 24, 2018. The sailors, who had reported that water was entering their vessel via the rudder shaft, reached out for help as their situation became precarious despite their efforts to manage the flooding with onboard pumps. The U.S. Coast Guard in San Juan received the distress call and promptly turned to the Amver system to locate a nearby vessel equipped to assist. They identified the 'CMA CGM Brazil,' a 620-foot container ship that was just 45 miles from the troubled sailboat. Upon receiving the request, the ship’s captain agreed to alter course and proceed to the aid of the sailors. Navigating through challenging conditions of ten-knot winds and five-foot waves, the crew of the 'CMA CGM Brazil' executed a towing plan to guide the stricken sailboat towards a safe harbor. Once they reached St. Martin, the sailors were found to be in good health and remained aboard their yacht during the tow. The 'CMA CGM Brazil' successfully transferred the sailboat and its crew to St. Martin Coast Guard authorities before continuing its journey, highlighting the spirit of maritime rescue and the importance of cooperation at sea.
