Detention of the 'May B' in Marina di Carrara Raises Safety Concerns

Sep 22, 2025 19:25

On September 17, 2025, the cargo vessel 'May B' was detained at Marina di Carrara, Italy, following the discovery of ten safety deficiencies. Among these, five were classified as serious enough to warrant the vessel's detention. The deficiencies included: 1) Invalid Safety Management Certificate; 2) Expired Maritime Labour Certificate; 3) Inadequate training in Life Saving Appliances; 4) Multiple other unspecified issues; 5) Non-compliance with ISM certificate regulations. After addressing these concerns, the 'May B' was released on September 21 and set sail for Eregli, where it is expected to arrive by September 29.

Historic Rendsburg Transporter Bridge Set for Transformation After Allision Incident

Apr 10, 2025 11:53

The Rendsburg transporter bridge, which met its fate at the hands of the ‘Evert Prahm’—now operating as ‘May B’—is set to embark on its final journey as it heads to the District Harbour. This significant event took place on April 10, following the bridge’s devastation beyond repair in a maritime accident. Local entrepreneur Martin Sick has big plans for the bridge, envisioning its transformation into a vibrant fish snack venue where tasty fish sandwiches will soon be on the menu alongside various events. On April 9, prior to the bridge’s departure, it was carefully loaded onto a trailer with the help of the transport company Ulferts and Wittrock, utilizing a massive 250-ton crane for the challenging task. This meticulous operation involved around 30 workers and was powered by donations reaching €35,000 from a crowdfunding campaign that Sick initiated to support this unique conversion project. The tug ‘Paulina’ (MMSI: 211223550) played a key role in towing the bridge from the Rendsburg Saatsee shipyard, with an estimated arrival at the District Harbour around 4 p.m. on April 10. Once at its new location, it is anticipated that it will take until summer for the first fish sandwiches to be served. Out of the four old drives from the transporter bridge, three will be scrapped, while the fourth, along with the bridge itself, will find a new home at the property where the fish snack bar will be situated. The remaining driving section will be displayed prominently. Historic Transporter Bridge Set for Journey to Rendsburg Harbour After Nine-Year Hiatus

Apr 03, 2025 11:15

On April 10, 2025, the iconic transporter bridge, which gained notoriety after its collision with the 'Evert Prahm' (now known as 'May B') on January 8, 2016, will finally embark on its journey from the Saatsee shipyard to the communal port of Rendsburg. This move marks a significant milestone for the structure, intended to serve as a picturesque open terrace and seating area for a fish snack bar situated along the Kiel Canal. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign spearheaded by the Schleswig-Holstein municipal utility company (Stadtwerke SH), the necessary funds to facilitate the bridge’s transport have been secured. The transport operation is slated to commence at dawn, with plans for the pontoon to set sail at approximately 12:30 p.m., alongside the transporter bridge. The logistics will involve using mobile cranes to load the bridge onto a trailer before it is moved to the quay, where it will then be transferred to a pontoon for a two-kilometer tugboat journey southward along the canal. Owner Martin Sick has plans to renovate this beloved landmark once it reaches its new location. Enthusiasts can anticipate the new fish snack bar to open in conjunction with the Rendsburg Canal Cup, scheduled for August 8-10. Notably, this unique transporter bridge celebrated its centennial in 2013 and is one of only eight such structures remaining globally. Following the 2016 incident, a new transporter bridge was constructed, mimicking the original design, and commenced operations in 2022.
