Incident Alert: Disabled Tanker Collides with Fishing Boats in Suriname

Nov 20, 2018 10:26

On November 19, 2018, at approximately 1 p.m., the tanker 'Tradewind Legend,' en route from Georgetown, experienced engine failure and drifted on the Suriname River. The vessel collided with 11 fishing boats stationed at the fishing center in Nieuw Amsterdam, Commewijne, causing significant damage to the vessels. The drifting was eventually halted when the tanker dropped anchor. The 'Tradewind Legend' was destined for the Tout Lui Faut oil refinery in Wanica to load an oil export cargo. In response to the incident, Staatsolie, the vessel’s charterer, expressed deep regret and confirmed that affected fishers would be compensated for their losses. The collision also resulted in damage to the quay at the fishing center and a nearby dam. Authorities swiftly initiated an investigation into the matter, following which the tanker was detained and later moored at Paramaribo at 5 p.m. local time, with coordinates 05° 51.88' N 055° 5.58' W.
