Coast Guard Conducts Medivac of Crewman from 'Seaboard Pride' in Gulf of Mexico
On April 7, 2013, a dedicated aircrew from the U.S. Coast Guard successfully executed a medical evacuation approximately 90 miles south of Southwest Pass in the Gulf of Mexico. The mission was prompted by an urgent report received around 9:55 a.m. from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans indicating that a Filipino crew member aboard the container ship "Seaboard Pride" was suffering from severe symptoms consistent with acute appendicitis. In response, watchstanders at Sector New Orleans coordinated the rapid deployment of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans. The helicopter crew arrived at the scene at 2:56 p.m., where they encountered the difficult task of hoisting the ill crewman from the top of the vessel’s wheelhouse. Once successfully lifted aboard, the Coast Guard aircrew transported the crewman back to Air Station New Orleans, where he was subsequently handed over to Emergency Medical Services. The medical team then rushed him to West Jefferson Medical Center located in Marrero for further evaluation and treatment. The crewman’s condition following the evacuation remains unknown. This incident highlights the critical role of the Coast Guard in maritime emergency responses.
