Ferry Fire Incident Near Olbia: Quick Response Averted Disaster

May 14, 2017 19:14

In the early hours of May 14, 2017, a fire erupted aboard the ferry "Giuseppe SA," approximately 50 miles off the coast of Olbia, Sardinia. The vessel was en route from Piombino and had a total of 113 individuals on board, comprising 81 passengers and 31 crew members. The alarm was raised when one of the trucks caught fire due to a short circuit in a trailer. Emergency response was swift, with the CP 330 from the Maddalena Port Captain dispatched to the scene alongside multiple ferries, including the "Masccalzone Scatenato," "Moby Wonder," and "Moby Aki." Additionally, a Coastguard helicopter and a rescue boat from Civitavecchia joined the efforts. The crew executed effectively by sealing off the deck and utilizing CO2 to control and extinguish the flames, preventing any further spread of fire. By 3:02 a.m., the "CP 306" arrived to escort the affected ferry back to safety. Upon reaching Olbia, the ferry was moored at berth 8 of the Isola Bianca Pier, where all passengers were safely evacuated with no injuries reported. Ambulances, tugs, and shore firefighting units were on standby to assist as necessary. Fortunately, the fire was contained, and passengers along with truck drivers were able to safely disembark with their vehicles. Following the incident, another ferry took over the service from Olbia to Piombino. For further information and images, Italian news outlets have covered the story extensively.
