On October 17, 2023, at 10:15 AM, the SAR vessel 'Salvamar Leo' successfully rescued 15 male migrants, all of North African origin, from a capsized fishing boat situated approximately 34 miles off the coast of Alicante. The rescue operation was initiated when the fishing boat 'L'Illeta d'Altea' discovered a vulnerable fiberglass vessel drifting between Benidorm and Alicante and promptly notified emergency services. While awaiting the arrival of 'Salvamar Leo', the container ship 'Medkon NLS', en route from Oran to Sevilla, remained on standby to monitor the precarious situation. Once on the scene, 'Salvamar Leo' towed the beleaguered boat back to the Alicante port, where the Red Cross was ready to provide vital assistance to the migrants.
