Incident at Brunsbüttel: 'Meile B' Allides with Lock Structure
On November 28, 2019, at 11:50 PM, the cargo vessel 'Meile B', which was making its way from Leixões to Oxelösund with an estimated time of arrival of December 1, encountered a mishap at the old lock of Brunsbüttel. During its entry maneuver in the old foreport, the vessel collided with the sheet piling and several dolphins. This unfortunate incident was primarily triggered by strong currents and winds that redirected the ship off its intended path. As a result of the allision, several dolphins were dislodged and ended up floating in the water, necessitating a salvage operation. Furthermore, the incident caused noticeable damage to the port side bow of the 'Meile B', with dents measuring up to 20 centimeters deep. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the event did not lead to any water pollution. Investigators found no sign of misconduct on the part of the ship's command. Following the incident, the 'Meile B' was permitted to continue its journey and docked in Kiel for a thorough class survey. The vessel arrived at Voith Quay on November 29 at 9:00 AM. After all necessary inspections were completed, it was released at 8:00 PM and continued its voyage toward Oxelösund, maintaining the same ETA of December 1 at 7:00 PM. Engine Malfunction Averted for Meike B Near Humber
On April 25, 2019, the freighter Meike B, which was traveling from Klaipeda to Howden Dyke while in ballast condition, encountered a significant challenge due to a main engine failure. The incident occurred at coordinates 53°42'42" N, 0°38'18" W, prompting the crew to temporarily anchor the vessel after identifying a malfunction in the main engine's remote control system. Following a thorough investigation, the Chief Engineer opted to switch the remote control to manual mode, which was subsequently tested and confirmed to be in excellent working order. During high tide, the ship's Master, in close coordination with the pilot, successfully departed from the anchorage without any signs of grounding as the water level rose. Tugs were deployed, following a recommendation from the pilot, ensuring a safe exit from the port. After conducting routine maintenance, the main engine remote control system was restored to full operational capacity, allowing the Meike B to continue its journey safely.
