Main Engine Malfunction Strands Mekhanik Brilin in Arctic Ice
On March 16, 2018, at 06:17 a.m., the cargo ship 'Mekhanik Brilin' encountered a critical main engine failure while navigating through the ice channel near timber jetty No. 25 in Arkhangelsk. The vessel, loaded with 3,585 meters of sawn timber, found itself immobilized in ice conditions. Fortunately, overnight assistance arrived, and on March 17 at 1 a.m., the 'Mekhanik Brilin' was successfully moored to the timber jetty with the cooperation of a powerful tug and an icebreaker. Repair efforts for the main engine were promptly initiated, allowing the ship to resume its journey on April 30.

In contrast, the 'Soyana,' carrying 2,422 metric tons of scrap, sustained significant damage, including holes and tears in its hull and superstructure. While there was no water ingress reported, the vessel's master deemed it unseaworthy. By 7:45 p.m., the icebreaker 'Dikson' had safely escorted the damaged 'Soyana' back to the entrance buoy at Arkhangelsk port.
