The new freight ferry 'Menawethan' has embarked on its sea trials, which commenced on January 29, 2026, in Vung Tau, Vietnam. This vital testing phase takes place in the South China Sea, off the picturesque coast of Vung Tau. Designed to replace the aging 'Gry Maritha', the 'Menawethan' is expected to begin its essential service to the Isles of Scilly later this year, bringing a state-of-the-art, dependable freight solution to transport vital goods and supplies throughout the year. With a robust cargo capacity, the 'Menawethan' is equipped for handling perishable items, including chilled and frozen goods, making it a significant upgrade for the islands’ logistical needs. Additionally, the vessel features a passenger lounge that can accommodate up to 12 individuals, enhancing its utility for occasional passenger transport. During the sea trials, critical aspects such as the vessel's performance, maneuverability, propulsion, and onboard systems were thoroughly evaluated. After successfully concluding these trials, the 'Menawethan' will undergo a final fit-out and certification process before its journey to the United Kingdom. Notably, the master of 'Gry Maritha', Tom Sexton, along with technical superintendent Luke Parnell, is in Vietnam to oversee the trials and ensure everything is on track for the new ferry's introduction to service.
