In a recent development, the yacht 'Valerie,' connected to Sergei Chemezov, the head of the sanctioned Russian defense conglomerate Rostec, has been relocated by Spanish officials. Initially docked at the MB92 shipyard in Barcelona, the vessel's repairs ceased due to a halt in payments, prompting authorities to step in. Spain had previously frozen the yacht in March under European Union sanctions, effectively preventing any usage or sale of the luxury vessel. Chemezov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has faced EU and U.S. sanctions since the 2014 annexation of Crimea and recently fell under Australian sanctions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Following a request from MB92 to vacate its berth to accommodate other vessels, the yacht was officially moved on September 20, escorted by Spain's civil guard police. Notably, it underwent a name change to 'Meridian A' on September 19, prior to the relocation. On the EU's sanctions list, the yacht is said to be owned by Chemezov's stepdaughter, Anastasia Ignatova, who was added to the list in April. A legal challenge against the yacht's immobilization was dismissed by a Madrid court in April, as Sulberg Services Limited, the company identified as the yacht's owner in the Equasis shipping database, failed to convince the court of their claim regarding ownership. This incident highlights continuing actions by European authorities to enforce sanctions against individuals associated with Russia's military actions.
