Coast Guard Rescues Injured Passenger from 'Svendborg' Amid Language Barrier Challenges

Jun 21, 2012 10:32

On June 18, 2012, the Coast Guard successfully medevaced a 60-year-old man from the 'Svendborg', situated approximately 30 miles east of Morehead City, North Carolina. The call for assistance came in at around 6:15 p.m. when a member of the Ship Arrival Notification System informed Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders of an incident involving a passenger who had fallen and sustained head trauma. In response, rescue teams launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, along with a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon. Upon arrival, two crew members from the Motor Life Boat boarded the 'Svendborg' while a rescue swimmer from the Jayhawk was deployed to attend to the injured individual. The operation proved to be more complex than usual due to a language barrier, which obstructed effective communication about the patient's condition. Despite these challenges, the Coast Guard crew managed to hoist the injured man from the 'Svendborg' and transport him safely to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City for further medical treatment.
