Heroic Rescue: 'Methoni' and Coast Guard Save 19 Cuban Migrants
On December 31, 2021, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded as the container ship 'Methoni', traveling from Miami to Veracruz, worked in tandem with the US Coast Guard to save 19 distressed Cubans. The incident occurred approximately 33 miles southeast of Alligator Reef Lighthouse, situated near Islamorada, Florida. The 'Methoni' contacted the Sector Key West Command Center at 1:40 PM, reporting that they had deployed their lifeboat to assist individuals in the water. One of the survivors recounted to the crew that their raft had capsized while carrying 19 people. Fortunately, all were safely rescued by the 'Methoni'. However, one individual required urgent medical attention; an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Miami successfully hoisted and transported this survivor to local emergency medical technicians, who then transferred them to Fisherman’s Hospital in Marathon for further care. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Cutter 'Charles Sexton' took charge of the remaining 18 migrants, who were set to be returned to their homeland. The Coast Guard's response effort included a variety of assets, notably the Coast Guard Cutter 'Raymond Evans', the Cutter 'Charles Sexton', a 45-foot boat crew from Coast Guard Station Islamorada, along with both an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Air Station Miami, as well as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater.
