ITF Flags Abandonment Case of METIN HUSEYNOV: 14 Seafarers Affected

Feb 01, 2026 00:00

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has reported the case of the vessel METIN HUSEYNOV (IMO: 9175171), indicating serious concerns over its abandonment. Flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, the ship is currently docked at Tuzla in Turkiye, with a troubling situation for its crew of 14 seafarers primarily from Azerbaijan and India. Many members of the crew are facing a significant backlog in salary, with owed wages accumulating over the past four months. This abandonment case was officially reported to the ITF on February 1, 2026, and remains open as authorities seek resolutions for the stranded seafarers. The ITF Seafarers abandonment list continues to monitor such alarming situations globally, aiming to ensure that maritime workers receive the support they deserve.

Turkish Crew Members of Abandoned Vessels Left in Dire Straits

Jun 26, 2020 10:34

Crew members aboard several vessels operated by the Turkish shipping company Palmali find themselves caught in a distressing situation, with many having worked tirelessly for over a year without receiving any compensation. Among the ships affected is the 'Caspian Mariner', currently docked in Istanbul. Other notable vessels in similar predicaments include the 'Agdash' and the 'Captain Nagdaliyev'. Assistance has been provided to the crews of the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' and 'Agdash' by an ITF coordinator; however, the circumstances remain critical. The 'Agdash' is anchored in the Suez Canal but raises concerns with an expired registration and insurance certificates. Meanwhile, the crew aboard the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' faces an urgent crisis, with only one ton of drinking water left onboard. Despite these harrowing conditions, the sailors continue to fulfill their duties, all the while their families endure months without financial support. The plight of the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' is particularly troubling, as the tanker has been under arrest since May 12, 2020, due to financial liabilities incurred by Palmali. The company has accrued significant debts related to bunkers and owes substantial wages to all crew members. After fulfilling their contractual obligations, many sailors were forced to remain on board for an additional 4 to 10 months without pay while facing intimidation and pressure to sign fraudulent payroll statements. The 'Caspian Mariner', presently awaiting repairs in the port of Yalova, has additional challenges: the air conditioning and fans are non-functional, exposing the crew to extreme temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius during the day and between 28-30 degrees at night. Throughout this ordeal, the crew has remained resilient, but the absence of support from Palmali has left them in a precarious and vulnerable state.

Caspian Mariner Released After Pollution Incident in Poti

Feb 26, 2019 10:45

The 'Caspian Mariner' has been freed from detention at Poti port after a significant environmental incident that occurred in late January to early February 2019. The vessel was held accountable for discharging oil products into the port's waters, leading to a hefty fine of 65,000 Georgian Lari (equivalent to approximately US$24,000) for the resulting ecological harm. Once the fine was settled, authorities allowed the ship to leave the port on February 5. Subsequently, the 'Caspian Mariner' docked in Istanbul on February 22 before continuing its journey to Marmara Ereglisi on February 26.
